ERC President delivers referee seminar in Cyprus
News from the National Federations

Nicosia, Cyprus, March 1, 2017. The referee in Volleyball must not always be a ‘rules man’.  In many instances, his approach and overall behaviour must go hand and hand with the psychology of players and coaches, whose job is not easy, especially in international matches. Luciano Gaspari, President of the European Refereeing Commission (ERC), highlighted this important piece of information during the Referees Seminar organised at the beginning of February by the Cyprus Volleyball Federation (CVF).

The Italian official’s vast experience and knowledge in refereeing matters was evident throughout the seminar, attended by all First Division referees together with the Vice-President of CVF, Dr Costas Constantinou, as well as the President of the Referees Commission, Pantelis Tofis, the Cyprus Referees Manager George Doritis, and CVF’s Technical Director George Stephanides.

“We are living in a technological world, where everything is constantly changing, and referees must not prove an exception to the rule,” Luciano Gaspari said.  “The CEV have introduced new technological changes in the game that referees need to be familiar with. The first is the electronic score-sheet. Communication between referees and e-scorer is another important part. And last but not least, the so-called challenge, as it’s used in tennis.” Not all of the above changes are currently used in the Cyprus Volleyball League and Cup, but they are used in all CEV international competitions, including the Champions League.

Gaspari had the chance to watch the local league match between Nea Salamina FAMAGUSTA and APOEL NICOSIA, and he admitted that this was a valuable experience for him. “Cyprus have gone one step higher in the European Volleyball ladder, but this must be a continuing process. Referees, coaches and players are all part of the jigsaw and their co-operation is very important in Volleyball’s rapid development.”
