Maiden cup triumph for Fleyr Tórshavn as TB Tvøroyri win fifth title after epic comeback
News from the Federations

Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, February 26, 2017. The Faroese Cup Finals crowned Fleyr Tórshavn and TB Tvøroyri as the eventual winners of the men’s and women’s competition, respectively after two dramatic, closely contested matches broadcast and streamed nationwide as the popularity of Volleyball in the Faroe Islands continues to grow at a very fast pace.

Women’s Final: KÍF Kollafjørður vs TB Tvøroyri 1-3 (26-24, 21-25, 21-25, 21-25)

Trailing by two sets to one, KÍF seemed likely to force a tiebreak decision as they were leading 11-2 in the fourth, but with an incredible fightback, TB levelled at 18-18 and went on to win the set 25-21, thereby securing their fifth cup win in history, their first since 2006.

The match had been a thriller all the way, the first set going neck to neck before KÍF prevailed 26-24. In the second set, the lead shifted back and forth before TB won 25-21. In the third set TB already gave a taste of their resilience as they had been trailing by six points before they levelled at 14-14 and went on to win 25-21. However, that was nothing compared to their great comeback in the fourth set, which secured them their first domestic trophy of the 2016-2017 season.

Men’s Final: Fleyr Tórshavn vs SÍ Sørvágur 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24)

Having won two sets and leading 10-4 and 14-9 in the 4th, Fleyr looked well on their way to their first ever cup victory, but after an incredible comeback from SÍ, Fleyr was suddenly trailing 17-22 and looked shaken. But not stirred, however, because after a psychological pep-talk from Fleyr coach Kristian Mikkelsen, the pendulum swung the other way again, and after surviving two set balls, Fleyr won the set 26-24 to secure their first ever cup trophy.

Fleyr had won the first set comfortably 25-17, but it was back to all square as SÍ won a tight second set 25-22. Fleyr was back in control again in the third set, winning it 25-18. SÍ coach Rajko Petrovic, who had insisted to use his young talents as much as possible, then opted to bring some of his more experienced players on court, something that nearly paid dividends, but had to accept defeat after his team wasted two set balls and having been close to forcing the tiebreaker.
