Volleyball legend Giani named coach of German men’s national team
News from the National Federations

Frankfurt, Germany, February 8, 2017. Andrea Giani is the new head coach of the German men’s Volleyball national team. The 46-year-old Volleyball legend from Italy follows in the footsteps of Vital Heynen under whose guidance Germany won bronze at the 2014 FIVB World Championships in Poland and gold at the Baku 2015 European Games. Giani’s focus will be mainly on this year’s European Championship Finals as well as on the qualification rounds for next year’s FIVB World Championship. “I do firmly believe in hard work and in the strength of the players belonging to this group,” Giani said.

“I look forward to start working for Germany because I see a lot of potential in their players, in the Federation and also in the sporting culture of this country,” Giani continued. “There are four key words that play a decisive role in my coaching philosophy: communication, discipline, commitment and belief in what you do.”

Giani is a real Volleyball legend. He is a three-time Olympic medallist with Italy, a triple world champion, a four-time European champion and a six-time gold medallist from the FIVB World League. He played as many as 474 matches with the Italian national team – a record that still stands – and was so versatile that throughout his career he played as a middle blocker, outside hitter and opposite hitter as well. After retiring from competitive sport, Giani started a coaching career in 2007 – taking the title of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup with Pallavolo MODENA in 2008. He was a member of the Italian team’s coaching staff for a few years before switching to Slovenia – and he took this side to unprecedented results, such as a silver medal from the 2015 edition of the men’s EuroVolley, gold from the 2015 European League and victory in the Group 3 Finals of the 2016 FIVB Volleyball World League. Last year Giani was at the helm of Calzedonia VERONA when the Italian club won the 2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup.

Germany’s setter Lukas Kampa commented: “I am happy with this announcement because I have only heard positive things about Andrea, even though we do not know each other personally. This is a good choice; Giani is a young coach, and while working with Slovenia, he showed that he is able to build a group, develop young players and has a clear understanding of the way he wants his team to play. As a Volleyball player, he is a real legend and an ambitious coach as well, so I have only positive feelings.”

The President of the German Volleyball Federation, Thomas Krohne: “With Giani, we have signed our most desired candidate and a real high-profile personality. Andrea convinced us with his knowledge of the game and with his aura, not to forget his worldwide reputation and resume which will come across very well and motivate the players even further.”

Giani’s debut will coincide with the World Championship qualifier taking place from May 23 to 28 in France where Germany will play a difficult tournament taking on hosts France, Turkey, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Iceland, with the eventual winners progressing to the Final Round of the World Championship due to take place in Italy and Bulgaria in 2018. The runners-up will have one extra opportunity to book their ticket to the Worlds with a third-round qualifier later in the summer. After the World Champs qualifier, Germany will play in the Group 3 of the World League, hoping to move up to the higher tier before taking on the Final Round of the EUROVOLLEY POLAND 2017 playing Italy, Slovakia and the Czech Republic in the first stage of the tournament in Szczecin.

“We want to qualify for the World Championship, win the FIVB World League Group 3 and make it to the semis of the EuroVolley,” Giani announced his ambitious goals shortly following his appointment at the helm of the German national team.
