Italy ‘hottest’ favourites in #EuroVolleyU18W qualifier on home soil
2017 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship - Women
Milano, Italy, January 12, 2017. Italy and more specifically Centro Pavesi in Milano will be hosting this weekend one of eight qualification tournaments to the 2017 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship – Women. Italy will take on the national teams of Belarus, Israel and Slovakia that arrived in Milano on Thursday morning whereas the hosts have been practicing at Centro Pavesi since January 2 already.
The venue of the tournament, Centro Pavesi, is a real Volleyball ‘hub’ offering top-class facilities and it has been a FIVB / CEV Development Centre since 2013. The main hall can accommodate up to 1,000 spectators and has already hosted a number of international events, including a qualification tournament to the 2015 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship held in January 2015. Centro Pavesi includes, inter alia, a guesthouse and restaurant and permanently hosts the young players of Club Italia, a team including the country’s most promising talents who are playing in the first division of the national league. Two of these players, Marina Lubian and Rachele Morello, are among those called up by head coach Luca Cristofani for the tournament coming up this weekend.
Italy are the favourites of the competition – and they always made it to the Final Round of the U18 European Championship in the 11 previous editions of the event. Belarus and Slovakia are expected to be Italy’s main rivals. Coincidentally, these nations achieved their best results at the same editions of the championship where Italy stood out. Back in 1995, Italy won gold and Slovakia finished third whereas in 2001 – when Italy claimed the top spot again – Belarus took bronze. Israel, on the other hand, are making their third appearance in the competition but have never managed to make it to the Final Round this far.
