Iceland’s ‘beach girls’ record historic win over three-time GSSE champions
2015 Games of the Small States of Europe
Reykjavik, Iceland, June 3, 2015. The second day of Beach Volleyball action at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in Reykjavik was blessed with good weather, little sunshine and a light breeze, thereby prompting many spectators to flock to the venue set up for the tournament, the first international Beach Volleyball competition ever held in Iceland. The students from schools nearby the stadium also found their way to the venue to have a closer look at the sport and cheer the players on.
It was a perfect day also for the host country as the home ladies achieved a historic feat in their second match of the tournament. Elísabet Einarsdóttir and Berglind Jónsdóttir indeed recorded a first victory for their country over a team from Cyprus as they edged in straight sets (21-17, 22-20) three-time GSSE gold medallists Mariota Angelopoulou and Zoi Konstantopoulou. The home ladies currently top the charts of the competition together with Monaco’s Caroline Revel/Magali Muratore who on Wednesday also recorded their second straight win, this time besting Anne Grethen and Rebekka Klerf of Luxembourg (21-14, 21-19). In the other match of the day, the ladies from Liechtenstein swept aside a duo from Malta (21-10, 21-17).
Moving on to the men’s competition, the team from Luxembourg beat Monaco 2:0 (21-11, 21-19) and therefore on Thursday will fight with Liechtenstein for the top position in Pool A. In Pool B, Andorra left no chance to San Marino’s Lorenzo Benvenuti and Ivo Mattia Valentini (21-8, 21-9) whilst Cyprus’ pre-favourites Dimitris Apostolou and Vladimir Knezevic stamped a 21-13, 21-8 win over Iceland’s Einars Sigurðsson and Orri Þór Jónsson. The teams from Iceland and San Marino will play for third place in their pool and the eventual winners of this clash will cross the ways of Monaco on Friday in the match for fifth place.
