Dublin City Centre to host Ireland again in farewell match before European qualifier
News from the National Federations

Dublin, Ireland, May 16, 2014. Following the remarkable success of their St. Patrick’s weekend event in Trinity College Dublin in which they beat Northern Ireland, the Irish women’s Volleyball team will be back in Trinity once again on Sunday, May 25 for another highly anticipated encounter. More interestingly, they will take on intriguing opposition in the Truman State University Bulldogs from Missouri USA, which competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and last season qualified from it to the NCAA Championships.

Adding to the occasion is that it will be the last match for the Irish before their European Championship qualifier in Scotland in June. Although this serves as a farewell opportunity for the team’s growing fan-base, the importance of this match for the players and coaching staff is still huge, with only 12 of the current panel of 15 players to make the cut for the all-important qualifier only a fortnight afterwards. The players hail from various parts of the country, in particular the Volleyball hot-spots of Kildare, Galway, and Dublin, while Mayo and Kilkenny are also represented.

In preparation so far for this match and indeed the European qualifier against Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Scotland and Malta, the Irish team has been in respectable form, having beaten Northern Ireland twice already this year in challenge matches (3-1 on each occasion), and most recently suffered a narrow loss to the Irish Premier League All-Stars 2-3, although they have shown tremendous progression against all the odds with a new and young team.

In his pre-match programme address, head coach Wim Roosenburg appeals for another huge turnout and outlines the growing courage and determination of his girls-in-green. “Yes we are building a new team, but a team with a lot of talent and a lot of potential. So we are ready to play any team and give them a tough time.”
