CEV President pleased with development plans of Cyprus Volleyball Association
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, April 28, 2014. CEV President André Meyer received on Monday a delegation from the Cyprus Volleyball Association including President Damianos Hadjidamianou – who combines his passion for Volleyball with many other commitments, being inter alia also a Board member at the European Weightlifting Federation – and CEV Honorary Member Andreas Stavrou.
“We had a very fruitful meeting where the Cyprus Volleyball Association shared the current status of their activities and also plans for the future,” Mr. Meyer says. “Though the country is still affected by an unprecedented financial crisis, we were told that Volleyball did not suffer that much of that. Volleyball is the only team sport where the number of licensed players did not decrease after the country was hit by the crisis whereas other sports like basketball or soccer have been confronted by major problems, with some clubs closing their doors since all of their players were gone.”

The Cyprus Volleyball Association is still very committed to the common cause it shares with Europe’s Volleyball family, i.e. the development and extensive promotion of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball: “Traditionally this country has played a leading role in the Small Countries Division,” Mr. Meyer recalls, “and their administrators have confirmed the intention to work closer with the other SCD members, thereby bringing in new ideas for the development of our sport across these countries. On top of this, we have been told that starting from next year the country will organise one CEV Beach Volleyball event per year, thereby resuming a tradition that got started in 2009 when Geroskipou Beach played host to a CEV Challenger. The Cyprus Volleyball Association has also invited the CEV Board of Administration to visit their country next year and therefore one of next year’s meetings will be taking place there,” Mr. Meyer continues. “We are also positively impressed by the many activities that the Cyprus Volleyball Association has undertaken to promote Volleyball and Beach Volleyball at grassroots level. They are laying the foundations for a bright future of our sport on an island which has always been fond of Volleyball and being blessed by the sun and a superb geographical location is a place where Beach Volleyball will always find a home.”
