Sammarinese captain eyes medal at home Championship
2014 CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship - Women
Serravalle, San Marino, April 3, 2014. The countdown has started in the tiny Republic of San Marino for the start of the 2014 CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship – Women Small Countries Division which is due to take place from April 17 to 19. The home team will be captained by setter Agnese Conti, one of a very few players who have already played international matches, the others being Anita Magalotti, Valeria Benvenuti, and Elisa Ridolfi.
“This is a totally different story and experience,” says the player who was born in 1996. “Last year we participated in the Games of the Small States of Europe and two years ago we also played at the European qualifiers but back then we were mainly supporting the senior members of the team. This time we are the ones in the spotlight. We bear the responsibility of representing our country and on top of this we will be playing at home. We all feel the importance of this tournament,” she continues.
“Especially the youngest members of the team feel some pressure but we have been working hard in order to be ready for the start of the competition,” she points out. “Even those who finally will not be among the 12 players nominated for the tournament, though disappointed, will be there to support the team.”
Questioned on the goals the Sammarinese team has set for this home tournament where the local heroines will be taking on Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Scotland, and Wales, Agnese says: “We still did not set any specific goal but this will be done in due course by our mentor Luigi Morolli. I can only promise that we want to play our best and possibly win a medal once the tournament comes to a close. We know that the other teams are more experienced but we will give it a try.”
