ESOC reviews memorable year and starts preparations for the next editions of the European Championships
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, January 17, 2013. The annual meeting of the European Sports Organising Commission (ESOC) was held in Luxembourg Thursday and Friday with the members drafting a series of proposals that will be submitted for approval to the CEV Board of Administration in late February.

ESOC President Pierre Mulheims opened the meeting, which was initially joined by CEV President Mr. André Meyer and CEV Vice President Mr. Jan Hronek, by evaluating and reviewing the annual institutional activities, focusing also on the decisions made by the FIVB Sports Events Council held last December in Lausanne.

The Sports Organising Commission worked through an updated proposed calendar for the next four years (2014-2017) after the FIVB released in late 2013 their respective programme and schedule through until 2017, at the end of last year.

The ESOC members also discussed a review of the Championships held in 2013, with the Youth Volleyball European Championship – from the next edition onwards renamed U18 Women and U19 Men European Championship – co-hosted by Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro that turned into a major success and raised the bar higher for all future organisers. The Final Rounds of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship, held in Denmark/Poland (men) and Germany/Switzerland (women), were also reviewed by the Commission members who were pleased with the outcome and general organisation.

The Commission is already looking ahead as another series of Championships will follow in 2014 and 2015; reports of the inspection meetings carried out for the Final Rounds of the 2014 CEV U19 Women/U20 Men European Championship were looked through. The competition started a couple of weeks ago with the first round and will continue into late April with seven 2nd round qualifiers per gender, before the third and last stage of the qualification process follows in July which will complete the list of the 12 teams that will compete later this summer at the Final Rounds in Estonia and Finland (women) and Czech Republic/Slovakia (men).

Plans for the Final Rounds of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship were also studied by the Commission, ahead of the qualification process getting underway in May. The ESOC members also provided a series of comments and remarks to start the preparations for the Official Regulations of the 2015 CEV U18 Women and U19 Men European Championship.

The Commission members also checked the recently updated guidance documents that are to be provided for Organising National Federations and drafted a preliminary list of the future CEV Supervisors/CEV Technical Delegates.

ESOC President Pierre Mulheims also updated all members on the latest information relating to the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship, as well as the qualification process and competition format in place for the Volleyball tournaments of the inaugural European Games – Baku 2015 and for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
