Snow Volley tournament highlights Christmas celebrations in Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg, Russia, January 7, 2014. Once more on the day Eastern Orthodox national churches celebrate Christmas – January 7 – the traditional “Snow Volley Christmas tournament” was held in Saint Petersburg. This time, however, there was no snow at all and with the temperature standing at +2° C the players performed on wet sand.
The tournament was attended by 50 teams and a total of 180 participants, including professional Beach Volleyball players, juniors, fans, and VIPs. The pros played 2 on 2 while for all other categories the format of the competition was 4 on 4. The organizers provided all players with hot porridge and tea donated by Tess which has been one of the main sponsors of the tournament for quite some years now.
The program of the “Snow Volley Christmas tournament” included also a traditional Russian entertainment known as “valenok throwing”, where men and women throw felt boots.
Cups and medals were awarded to the winners of the Volleyball tournament by the Committee for Physical Culture and Sport of the city of St. Petersburg, while balls were donated by the Russian Volleyball Federation. T-shirts were presented by the Northwestern Volleyball Association, while other gifts and prizes were prepared by the sponsors that included Gazprom Mezhregiongaz St. Petersburg, Avrora, the pharmaceutical holding Severo Zapad, Komus as well as the jewelry store Zolotoy.
