DRESDNER SC happy with results of DOL for CEV Cup Challenge Round
News from the clubs
Dresden, Germany, December 19, 2013. Germany’s vice-champions DRESDNER SC were happy with the results of the DOL for the Challenge Round of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup that were announced on Thursday morning. After finishing the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League with two victories and third place in Pool A, DRESDNER SC was promoted to the Challenge Round of the CEV Volleyball Cup coming up in early February.
They draw was a lucky one for DRESDNER SC avoided top teams such as Turkey’s Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL or Russia’s Uralochka-NTMK EKATERINBURG and in the last round preceding the semis will get to play Khimik YUZHNY of Ukraine or Poland’s Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA.
“The team and our fans are happy with what we have achieved so far in the European Cups and we really wanted to continue our campaign this year. A travel to Ukraine would be a very interesting experience while a game with Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA would see us play one of our former players, Heike Beier” says Managing Director Sandra Zimmermann.
The 1/4 final matches starring Khimik YUZHNY and Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA will run through January 14-22. The first game will take place in Ukraine with the return following one week later in Poland. DRESDNER SC will then join the competition in the Challenge Round playing first away and then at home.
DRESDNER SC got the right to continue their European campaign this season after seizing the night on Tuesday in the last round of the prelims for the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League as the players coached by Alexander Waibl downed BEZIERS Volley in straight sets. Only a few days after losing in the semis of the national cup, they got back on track showing their fighting spirit as well as a very good performance. “It is good that we are not going to play Fenerbahce in the next round because they are the heavy favorites in this competition. Nevertheless, if we make the semis, we are anyway going to be the outsiders” head coach Alexander Waibl says. “A reunion with Heike Beier would certainly make me really happy.”
