Montpellier to host indoor Zonal tournament
News from the Zonal Associations
Montpellier, France, November 13, 2013. After playing host to a CEV Satellite tournament last June, Montpellier is once again attracting a good share of Europe’s Beach Volleyball elite, this time for an indoor Zonal event that is open to teams from the countries that have recently contributed to the establishment of the Western European Volleyball Zonal Association (WEVZA), i.e. Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland.
The tournament scheduled for November 29-December 1 will feature 12 teams per gender representing four countries. The venue is well-known to many Beach Volleyball players for the local Centre National du Beach Volley is one of the best facilities of that kind for the sport.
The indoor Zonal event in Montpellier rounds out a very busy season that got started last April with the CEV Satellite in Antalya and whose climax came in early August with a memorable edition of the European Championship Final in Klagenfurt. The Zonal events included in the CEV Beach Volleyball Tour represent an excellent opportunity for up-and-coming teams to test their likes and see where they stand as they take on opponents from their neighboring countries.
The host nation is allowed to register up to six teams per gender - including their top duo, Melinda Adelin and Laura Longuet (see picture) - while foreign countries can be represented by a maximum of two pairs per gender. The winners will take home 140 FIVB Ranking Points, a good reward for their efforts and also a valuable addition to their tally as the race to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is just about to start. The tournament will get started with a pool phase to be followed by the knock-out stage.
