Schwaiger sisters voted Austria’s Team of the Year
News from the National Federations
Vienna, Austria, November 1, 2013. Three months after their home campaign was crowned with gold at the 2013 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final in Klagenfurt, Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger were voted Austria’s Team of the Year 2013 by a panel of sports journalists from their home country. The Schwaiger sisters are the first females to top the charts of this poll as they could edge the competition brought by Austria VIENNA, winners of the soccer national league, and Formula 1 world champions Red Bull Team.
The President of the Austrian Volleyball Federation (OeVV), Peter Kleinmann, addressed a few warm words to the Schwaiger sisters: “Our Volleyball family is very proud of the Schwaiger sisters who – with their European gold in Klagenfurt – were voted Austria’s Team of the Year. This is an incredible acknowledgement. I have to thank Doris and Stefanie for their performance but also the organizers of the Beach Volleyball European Championship in Klagenfurt, Hannes Jagerhofer and Reinhard Lischka, who with their team were able to stage a memorable Championship whereby Beach Volleyball was in the spotlight of all media. I would like to thank the European Volleyball Confederation that allotted the organization of this Championship to our country as well as the sports journalists who joined this poll for they picked out Doris and Stefanie among a series of excellent teams.”
Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger won European gold last August 3 with more than 8,000 fans in attendance for the last act of the women’s tournament held on the shores of the Wörthersee.
The Schwaiger sisters received that award within the frame of a special gala held at the Austria Center in Vienna together with the country’s sportsman and sportswoman of the year, football star David Alaba – who plays for FC Bayern Munich – and alpine skier Anna Fenninger.
The final standing for the “Team of the Year” saw Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger on top followed by Austria’s soccer league winners Austria VIENNA, the Red Bull Racing Team (Formula 1), with the men’s handball and alpine skiing national teams settling for fourth and fifth place respectively.
