DRESDNER SC beat arch-rivals to get right boost for CL debut
News from the clubs
Dresden, Germany, October 18, 2013. On Wednesday DRESDNER SC celebrated a home victory in their season’s opener as cheered by 3,000 fans at Margon Arena the players around head coach Alexander Waibl beat arch-rivals SCHWERINER SC 3:1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-19, and 25-18). That was a much anticipated game starring last year’s national champions and cup winners SCHWERINER SC and the home heroines of DRESDNER SC.
“We served really well and we made fewer mistakes in some key moments, including the late phases of the game” said head coach Waibl. “I am really satisfied especially because I have seen the right team work and spirit” he continued.
DRESDNER SC caught a very good start and set the pace of the game at both technical time-outs (8:6, 16:14) in the first set. Team captain Stefanie Karg and her teammates showed a very good collective effort and it was Jaroslava Pencova who finished the set after 23 minutes (25-18) with a terrific block.
The second set followed a similar plot but this time it was SCHWERINER SC that dictated the tempo (8:5, 16:14); their block worked just fine and Saskia Hippe – a member of the German national team that won silver at this year’s EuroVolley – spiked with great efficiency. Their team captain Lousi Ziegler sealed the final 25-19 for the 1:1 in sets.
After a flying start (4:0) for the home heroines, SCHWERINER SC controlled the game at the first technical time-out of the third set (8:6) but Lisa Izquierdo made it 10 all for the hosts. After that DRESDNER SC accelerated their pace (16:12) and Izquierdo cashed the provisional 2:1 lead with a single block.
The fourth set was very close too up to 12 all; DRESDNER SC team captain and setter Mareen Apitz contributed a three-point lead (17:14) and the home side did not look back anymore to claim a well-deserved 3:1 win after 99 minutes of play.
SCHWERINER SC head coach Felix Koslowski chose Apitz as MVP of the game while the home mentor Alexander Waibl picked out Saskia Hippe from the other side of the net. Lisa Izquierdo and Jaroslava Pencova top scored for DRESDNER SC with 16 and 13 points respectively.
DRESDNER SC can now confidently look at their debut in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League with the first round coming up on Wednesday as they host France’s rookie BEZIERS Volley.
