Dominican Republic, USA and China sport perfect records at Women’s U23 Worlds
News from the FIVB

Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, October 7, 2013. The Dominican Republic in Pool A and United States and China in Pool B all have perfect win-loss records and the maximum possible points after two days of action at the inaugural FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship. As for the European teams, on Sunday Italy suffered their second tie-break defeat, this time to Japan, while Turkey was downed in straight sets by pool leaders Dominican Republic (see picture). Germany claimed their first win in the tournament as they routed Kenya in straight sets.
At the High Performance Center in Tijuana, the Dominican Republic registered their second straight-set victory in defeating Turkey (25-18, 25-16, and 25-21), while in Mexicali the United States downed Cuba (25-20, 25-19, and 25-21) and China capped the night with a 3:1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-22, and 25-23) victory over Brazil. Jeoselyna Rodriguez recorded seven aces among her team-leading 15 points for the Dominican Republic. “We added three more valuable points to our tally and definitely the good aggressive serves carried us today,” Dominican Republic’s head coach Marcos Kwiek said.

The captain Gina Mancuso tallied 15 points to top the scoring charts for the United States. “It started at the service line,” USA’s mentor Karch Kiraly stated. “Our main expectation is to improve every day, to a better team and a better coach.”

Zhang Xiaoya was the main offensive force of China with 19 points, followed by Liu Yanhan with 16 and Wang Qi with 11. “It was a learning experience for our team,” China’s Xu Jiande said. “Brazil is a very strong team with a lot of tradition.”

In other matches in Tijuana, Japan handed Italy a second consecutive defeat in five sets (21-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, and 15-12) and Argentina defeated Mexico in straight sets (26-24, 25-21, and 25-21). In the other contest in Mexicali, Germany crushed Kenya 25-9, 25-15, 25-10.
