Home heroines and Danish underdogs claim NEVZA Tournament in Goteborg
News from the Zonal Associations
Goteborg, Sweden, October 6, 2013. Sweden’s Karin Lundqvist/Nina Grawender and Martin Olesen/Peter Kildegaard of Denmark came out as the winners of the NEVZA Indoor Beach Volleyball tournament held through this weekend at the local Beach Center in Goteborg.
That was the second international tournament held this year by the North European Volleyball Zonal Association (NEVZA) following on the NEVZA Championships held in late August in Oslo. It was also part of the 2013 CEV Continental Tour thereby distributing FIVB Ranking Points.
The competition was joined by teams from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark. On Sunday home heroines Karin Lundqvist and Nina Grawender beat Norway’s Cindy Treland and Janne Pedersen in the final match (21-16, 21-19). “Our opponents played very well, especially in defense, but our side-out worked just fine and we killed many blocks. We raised the level of our game right in time for the final and this is what we liked the most” Lundqvist said. Camilla Nilsson and Tadva Yoken won bronze for Sweden after claiming in straight sets (21-11, 21-16) the consolation final against their countrywomen Jenny Persson/Sigrid Simonsson.
Though Norway had dominated the men’s tournament qualifying three duos for the semis, Martin Olesen and Peter Kildegaard could beat NEVZA champions Morten Kvamsdal and Oivind Hordvik in the final game (2:1; 22-20, 13-21, and 15-11). Norway’s Jonas Kvalen and Lars Fredrik Tvinde got bronze following the withdrawal of their compatriots Andreas Takvam and Runar Sannarnes.
All players really enjoyed the opportunity to compete at Beach Center where the local organizers and Beach Volleyball club provided first-class facilities for a successful and memorable tournament for all involved.
