Rottenburg hosts Virtual Zonal tournament
News from the National Federations
Rottenburg, Germany, September 13, 2013. The city of Rottenburg is playing host this weekend to an international Beach Volleyball tournament where FIVB Ranking Points are at stake. This is second only to the FIVB Grand Slam in Berlin and features teams from what could be defined a “virtual” Zonal Association in Western Europe.
The main star is Thomas Kaczmarek who is returning to the international stage after almost entirely missing the summer season due to injury. Kaczmarek – whose previous partner Alexander Walkenhorst has teamed up with Lars Flüggen to claim a series of outstanding results this year – is set to play in Rottenburg alongside Marcus Popp, a former member of Germany’s Volleyball national team who a couple of weeks ago finished fourth at the German nationals with Sebastian Fuchs.
Two home players from Rottenburg are also set to compete at the SunDays tournament, namely Stefan Schmeckenbecher – who got a wild-card for the men’s tournament – and Leonie Welsch who recently won silver at the CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship in Belarus. Some more decorated players set to compete this weekend in Rottenburg are 2010 German national champion Julia Sude, 2012 U23 European champion Chantal Laboureur, Cinja Tillmann and Armin Dollinger/Jonas Schröder who this year won silver at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.
The German teams will cross their ways with duos from Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. After the qualification matches played on Friday, the Main Draw gets underway on Saturday and the matches will continue until late in the evening for the centre court is equipped with floodlights. Semis and finals will round out the tournament on Sunday, September 15.
