Germany's Denise Hanke signs for Eczacibasi to play against her mentor in national team
News from the clubs
Istanbul, Turkey, August 5, 2013. Denise Hanke was signed by Turkey’s heavyweight Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL as their starting setter for the coming season. After winning gold in the final stage of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European League in Varna with Germany’s national team, Hanke traveled to Istanbul to get to know the staff and start familiarizing with the city. This will be Hanke’s first season abroad after she previously played for the likes of SCHWERINER SC.
Hanke was awarded “Best Server” at the European League finals in Varna and upon making it to Istanbul she joined some workshops and clinics with the members of the local junior team (see picture). “We were evidently happy to win the European League and before re-starting the summer season with the national team, I wanted to have a short holiday with my boyfriend here in Istanbul. This way I already had the opportunity to figure out how life runs here and everything looks perfect. I was also very happy to play for some time with the junior members of the club; this experience brought back some nice memories from my first years in Volleyball” Hanke says.
She shares some funny exchanges with her coach from the national team, Giovanni Guidetti, who is also the mentor of Eczacibasi archrivals VakifBank ISTANBUL: “He did ask me why I shall train and develop my skills under his guidance to stand on the other side of the net once I compete in Turkey’s national league” she says. “In the end, I think it will be funny to play next season with my mentor from the national team standing on the opposite side of the court”.
