150 players compete at NIR School Beach Volleyball Champs

Belfast, Northern Ireland, June 23, 2013. More than 30 schools’ teams played in the annual Northern Ireland Beach Volleyball on East Strand Portrush. Braving cold and showers, more than 150 young players produced some exciting Volleyball.
In the end Portadown College scored a senior double in the Under 18s, the Boys beating Dalriada Ballymoney and the Girls’ A Team winning their final against Portadown College B. Coleraine High School proved too strong in the Under 16s final beating Craigavon Senior High and at Under 14 in an all Armagh final Killicomaine Junior High beat Lurgan Junior High. The Boys of Carrickfergus Grammar School won the Under 16 title beating Ulidia Integrated in the final.
Brian Stalker from Cumbria who was Chief of the Beach Volleyball at last summer’s London Olympics on Horse Guards Parade flew into the Province to lead a weekend Referees’ course for Northern Ireland Volleyball whistlers. A member of the British Volleyball Board and a former indoor international referee who worked throughout Europe with Belfast man Gerard Murphy who was Ireland’s only International Volleyball Referee, Stalker returns to UUJ next weekend for completion of the course with the dozen candidates from clubs across Northern Ireland.
