Turkey defeats titleholder Italy to clinch second win at U20 World Champs

Brno, Czech Republic, June 22, 2013. World No. 4 Turkey confirmed their form with their second win at the FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship in Brno, Czech Republic. The team of head coach Gökhan Edman overpowered titleholder Italy in a thrilling five-setter 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, and 15-9). In the second Pool D match, Egypt swept Nigeria in an all-African duel (25-9, 25-18, and 25-11).
In Pool A, Peru came back strongly to beat Puerto Rico 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-20) in their second match at 2013 FIVB Women’s U20 World Champs. One set down, Peru replied with increased efficiency and a remarkable fighting spirit. Cold shower for host Czech Republic in Saturday’s second match for Pool A: in their duel with the Dominican Republic, the team of head coach Marek Ondrej suffered a setback. In front of 1,300 spectators, the Caribbean side stormed to a spectacular straight-set win (25-13, 25-22, and 25-20).
Mexico booked their first win in Brno by defeating Bulgaria 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-20, and 15-11). Star of the match was Mexican Samantha Bricio becoming the first athlete of the tournament to mark 26 points in a single match. In the second match of Pool C, Brazil showed all their powerful Volleyball at Vodova sports hall beating USA 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, and 25-22) on their debut at the Women’s U20 World Championship.
In Pool B, Japan booked their second victory by sweeping Colombia in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, and 25-17). The South Americans tried their best to hold Japan’s pace, but were unable to cope with the agility and speed the Asians displayed on Saturday afternoon. World No. 1 China left no doubt about their strength by beating Serbia in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, and 25-16). Even though Serbia tried hard to push the Chinese to their limits, the team of head coach Jiande Xu controlled all aspects of the game.
