Bobruisk, Belarus, June 20, 2013. The EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour will stop this weekend for the very first time in the Republic of Belarus with the inaugural Belarus Open taking place in Bobruisk through June 21-23. This will be a very good test for the country that will host in late August the 2013 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship in Molodechno.
Bobruisk is one of the oldest cities in the Republic of Belarus whose roots date back to the 14th century. The name of the city stems from the Russian word for beaver, babyor, for these animals used to populate the River Berezina. Beavers have disappeared since a long time but a bronze one – to be found in the city center – has turned into the real symbol of Bobruisk. In 2010 this city did also play host – together with Mogilev – to the final round of the CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Men for what turned into a tournament that did break all previous records in terms of attendance. The final match opposing Russia to Bulgaria did see more than 5,000 fans on the stands.
The Belarus Open is set to be joined by 18 women teams while 29 duos are set to compete in the men’s division. Belarus, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine will be represented in the tournament. The Main Draw starring 16 teams per gender will be played with the so-called double elimination format. The teams participating in the women’s competition will get FIVB Ranking Points for the tournament is included on this year’s Continental Tour.
