Volleyball mourns former European champion Ingrid Visser
News from the National Federations

Nieuwegein, Netherlands, May 27, 2013. This morning the Spanish police announced that former Dutch international Ingrid Visser and her partner Lodewijk Severein have been found murdered near the Spanish city of Murcia. The record-international (514 caps) and her partner were missing since Tuesday, May 14. The Dutch and international Volleyball communities are deeply shocked. 
The Spanish police was actively involved in searching for the Dutch couple the past two weeks. A lot of people tried to help the families of Ingrid and Lodewijk in their quest for their family members. Since they had been missing for two weeks, the hopes to find them alive had decreased. However, the news of the fatal end of the missing was a major shock.

“The murder of Ingrid and Lodewijk is first of all an incredible drama for their family, friends and other loved ones”, says Michel Everaert, Director of Sports of the Dutch Volleyball Federation (Nevobo). “That a lot of their friends and relations are part of the Volleyball community is of minor importance. Our thoughts and compassion mainly go out to the ones that were close to them”.  

“Ingrid was one of the key players of the Dutch women’s Volleyball team. From 1994 up to last year Ingrid totalled 514 caps, an incredible number. In 2007 I had the honour to award her our golden federation pin for her record status as an international. That her young life and Lodewijk’s have been cut short so tragically is incredibly sad and shocking. Our sympathy goes out to their families, friends and everybody that loved them”, says Nevobo president Hans Nieukerke.  

Bert Goedkoop, former head coach of the Netherlands and now technical manager of the Federation adds: “We could always count on Ingrid, 100%. Even in times the national team did not perform very well, she stayed true. For a long period of time, Ingrid was a certainty for the Dutch team, one of the known faces, something we highly appreciated. With the loss of Ingrid, we lose one of the biggest, most dedicated Dutch internationals ever”.  

35-year old Ingrid Visser started her Volleyball career in 1984 with VC Nesselande. In 1994 she started playing in the premier league with VVC Vught. After three years Ingrid went abroad, first to Brazil for Minas Tenis Clube, followed by Vicenza Volley (ITA), CV Las Palmas (ESP), CV Tenerife (ESP), TVC Amstelveen (NED), Leningradka (RUS) and CAV Murcia (ESP) before playing in 2011/2012 for Baki BAKU (AZE).  

In October 1994, Ingrid debuted in the national team with a friendly match against Ukraine. In total she played five World Championships, nine European Championships and the Olympics in Atlanta. The 514 caps she totaled are an absolute record in the Netherlands and perhaps even abroad. In 1995 she and her team won the European Championship, in Atlanta (1996) the Netherlands ended fifth. In 2007 Ingrid received the golden federation’s pin because of her record status as an international and her merits for Volleyball in the Netherlands.

57-year old Lodewijk Severein was the Dutch team manager from 2006 to 2009. He played with the well-known Volleyball club Martinus for years, after which he stayed loyal to the club as a coach and sponsor. Bert Goedkoop played with Lodewijk in Amstelveen: “Lodewijk was a well-known and much liked person in the world of Volleyball. Lodewijk had a big heart for Volleyball and top sports and was a very successful businessman. A big loss for us, but mostly for his family and his loved ones”.
