Portugal's juniors finalize their preparations for upcoming World qualifier in France
News from the National Federations
Porto, Portugal, May 4, 2013. Portugal men’s junior national team will be traveling on Monday to France and namely to Saint-Jean d’Illac where the guys mentored by Antonio Guerra and Ricardo Rocha will be trying to get the right to compete at the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship scheduled for August 22-September 1 in Ankara and Izmir, Turkey.
After flying first from Porto to Lisbon and then from there to Toulouse, the group will be making it to Bordeaux by bus. Before their departure they are set to continue their preparations at Clube Atlântico Madalena and Carvalhos High School.
“Some players are still not available because they are busy with the final stages of the national championship” the head coach says. “Some more are with the senior national team but they will be joining us in France” he continues.
Portugal will be playing there last year’s bronze medallists from the European Championship of Belgium, before they continue by testing their skills against France, Poland and Latvia.
“We know that as usual our mission is very difficult but what really matters is that we get to know where we stand and this you can only figure out only as long as you compete” the head coach stresses. “One thing that we know for sure is that we have to perform well in serve and counter-attack. We also need to defend a lot and make it difficult for our opponents to score. That will be very difficult because they all serve and block really well”.
The winners of the four qualification tournaments coming up next week will join hosts Turkey and 2012 European champions Italy to complete the European contingent for the World Championship.
