CEV fortieth anniversary celebrations coming up in Luxembourg City
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, April 29, 2013. Almost forty years have gone since that day when CEV was born. September 9, 1973: on that day 24 national federations got together and did eventually join forces to set up Europe’s Volleyball governing body. This happened ten years after a European Sports Commission was established in Bucharest to start coordinating the efforts made for the promotion of Volleyball across Europe. Right by the time Munich was hosting the 1972 Olympics, the FIVB General Assembly decided that time had finally come to transform such Commissions into real and structured Continental Confederations. Europe promptly followed up on that recommendation and CEV was born one year after the closing ceremony of the 1972 Olympic Games.
This coming weekend the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg – where the CEV headquarters moved in 1989 – will be under the spotlight and welcome a good share of the Volleyball family to celebrate the 40 years of Europe’s Volleyball governing body. The real highlights of a busy and emotional weekend are scheduled for Saturday, May 4, as CEV President André Meyer – accompanied by the CEV Board members, high-ranking authorities of the Grand Duchy and representatives of 41 national federations – will unveil the state-of-the-art premises recently bought by CEV in Luxembourg City and where the CEV head offices have moved since late February. The international Volleyball family will be represented there by FIVB President Dr. Ary Graça F° and FIVB Honorary Vice President Theofanis Tsiokris who will join a series of illustrious guests, including the Minister of Sport of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Mr. Romain Schneider, officials of other sports federations and representatives of the CEV sponsors and partners.

“We are all looking forward to welcoming our guests so that they will have the opportunity to have a first-hand look at our premises. Our goal, by moving there, is to provide our Volleyball family with a place that they can call their “home” and where everyone working for the good of the sport will come together and enjoy excellent conditions to move forward with our work and continue with the growth and terrific development that Volleyball and Beach Volleyball have experienced in the past decades” CEV President André Meyer says.
“Actually there is much more to celebrate with our Volleyball friends this weekend as on Saturday evening a special gala will follow to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the European Volleyball Confederation” Mr. Meyer continues. Neumünster Abbey – one of the coolest meeting places in Luxembourg City – will play host to a gala whereby the history of Volleyball in Europe will be brought under the spotlight, thereby sharing memories and projecting CEV into the future. “Via these celebrations we want to review the incredible journey we have been going through since those early days and, at the same time, re-assert our commitment to contribute a long-term and sustainable development of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball also in the years to come” Mr. Meyer stresses. “It is a unique opportunity to come together in that spirit of friendship that our sport is known for but also to assert our intention to join our forces to work for one and common goal, which is the good of our beloved sport” he concludes.
