Studenti TIRANA claim twelfth title in 19 years
News from the National Federations
Tirana, Albania, April 10, 2012. Studenti TIRANA extended their supremacy in Albania men’s national league by claiming their twelfth title in the last 19 years and following up on last year’s win. This season turned into one to remember for the side from Albania’s capital city as the group mentored by head coach Ylli Tomorri did sweep the national league as well as the national cup. In the Championship series Studenti edged their archrivals of Teuta as they claimed three out of the four matches played in the last couple of weeks.
Teuta had started the series by claiming the first game (3:2) played at “Ramazan Njala” sports hall in Durres before Studenti fought their way back by winning the second fixture with the same score as they played before their home fans at “Fahrie Hoti” sports palace in Tirana. The plot did not change also in the third clash where Studenti eventually cruised past once more at the tie-break to claim a 2:1 lead in the series but Teuta did not accept that defeat as they thought this was stemming from what was a correct decision made by the first referee during the fourth set.
After losing that third game 2:3, the club did decide to boycott the next match and did not show up there thereby breaking the official regulations set by the Albanian Volleyball Federation. As a result of this, Studenti TIRANA was awarded a 3:0 de-facto win though the match did not take place and eventually declared the 2012/2013 national champion.
The Technical and Disciplinary Commission of the Albanian Volleyball Federation got together twice in the past few days and agreed upon not accepting the protest submitted by Teuta; they also condemned the club’s decision to boycott the fourth round of the Championship series, asking for more fair-play, one of the quality the sport of Volleyball stands out and is known for.
