ECOC discusses ideas to support work of coaches at all levels
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, March 1, 2013. The European Coaches Commission (ECOC) met this past week in Luxembourg City thereby rounding off a few days where various CEV organs got together to work out ideas and proposals to be submitted to the CEV Executive Committee and Board of Administration.
The ECOC meeting was chaired by Philippe Blain (pictured) as the former coach of France’s national team recently took over the presidency of the Commission from CEV Senior Vice President Aleksandar Boricic who stepped down due to other commitments in FIVB and CEV.

The Commission reviewed various proposals and more specifically followed up on those that were endorsed by the CEV Board in conjunction with its last meetings. The ECOC will be responsible for collecting educational materials to be posted on a coaches’ area to be added to the CEV website and where Volleyball and Beach Volleyball trainers will be able to retrieve useful info to continue their education and develop their knowledge of the sport as well as of the latest developments in Volleyball coaching.

A special survey will be carried out by ECOC to get an overview of the various educational programs and certifications existing in Europe, with the goal to get ready for the policies adopted by the EU in terms of coaches’ certification that will be imposed on all sports.

The ECOC discussed also a series of proposals to amend the formula of the European Champs – in all age groups – with the primary goal to provide lower ranked teams with more opportunities to play and let the top sides enter the competition at a later stage. The international calendar shall be eventually revised accordingly making sure that the necessary consistency is being kept across the various age groups. In this sense, and upon request of the CEV Board, the ECOC has worked also on a revision of the age limits in order to harmonize that provision for national teams as well as for Beach Volleyball competitions. The ECOC will be closely working with the ESOC (European Sports Organizing Commission) on all these projects of common interest and the two Commissions are expected to significantly strengthen their general cooperation in the near future.

The Commission also studied the changes adopted by FIVB to determine the teams eligible to compete on the World Tour and attribute vacancies to the various Confederations for the age group Championship. Detailed proposals will be submitted to the CEV Board to possibly achieve a reasonable combination between universality and performances in previous editions of the Champs. Other discussions followed about the composition of the teams participating in the final rounds of the European Championship with a few proposals prepared by ECOC to be studied by the CEV Board within the frame of its next working session scheduled for June 2013 in Turkey.
