Ibiza, Spain, January 28, 2013. CAI TERUEL won the 2013 Spanish Cup after beating Unicaja ALMERÍA 3:0 (29-27, 25-19, and 25-23) in the final of the tournament held this past weekend in Ibiza. The squad from Teruel achieved its third consecutive title in the competition, thus extending its supremacy in Spanish men’s Volleyball.
The final match of “Copa del Rey” casted the two main forces of Spanish domestic Volleyball in the last seasons, Unicaja ALMERIA and CAI TERUEL, two teams that demonstrated their superiority throughout the competition held in Ibiza to eventually star in a spectacular title-deciding game.
CAI TERUEL took use of its rivals’ mistakes early in the match to take a clear lead in the first set. However, the Andalusian squad was able to come back and recover the difference, with junior sensation Andres Villena earning his star condition in his first participation in a Cup final. In a dramatic end of the set, CAI TERUEL showed more preeminence in the decisive stage of the period, in order to put the 29-27 that paved the way of the “naranja” team to victory. In the second set, five consecutive points in a rotation with Juan Carlos Barcala at serve established a difference in the scoreboard (18:13) that broke the period and that Unicaja ALMERÍA was unable to recover. CAI TERUEL put the Cup at reach with the 25-19 that meant the 2:0.
The crowd that filled up the stands of Sa Blanca Dona sports hall expected the reaction by Unicaja ALMERIA and the 8-time Cup winners did not disappoint their fans with an effective performance in the third set. Opposite players Juan Carlos Barcala and Andres Villena engaged in a spectacular duel of attacking actions that produced a constant tie in the period. In a breathtaking end of the set, the team trained by Oscar Novillo was able to keep its mistakes to a minimum to achieve the final 25-23, thus beating its archrivals 3:0.
“We have been working very hard for this; our victory today occurs as a consequence of the fruits of our hard work”, said CAI TERUEL head coach Oscar Novillo who pointed out the decisive performance by tournament MVP Juan Carlos Barcala. “After two years out of our league, he showed his skills today. I think he could become a key factor in our intentions of winning Cup and League titles this year”, added the Spanish head coach.
“Unicaja ALMERIA was the clear favorite for this Cup, as we lost against them in the league match, but we could present a game system that made impossible for them to impose their style of playing”, pointed out Juan Carlos Barcala; “it is an honor to receive the MVP award and to have led my teammates to victory”, said the international player.
