Latvian kids enjoy master classes with Olympic bronze medalist Martins Plavins
News from the National Federations
Riga, Latvia, January 16, 2013. Olympic bronze medalist Martins Plavins recently staged some “master classes” specifically addressed to children who could enjoy that unique opportunity to play with one of Latvia’s sports idols in the premises of the “Brazilija” beach sports center in Riga.
The very first “master class” was held this past week and the kids looked simply enthusiastic; their training sessions were rounded by a question time and gifts – provided by the Latvian Volleyball Federation and sponsor Asics – were distributed to those children who could answer the questions asked by Plavins and his coach Aigars Birzulis.
“The atmosphere was just great and I was very happy to practice with the children” says Plavins. “They were really interested in knowing more about Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. Once I come back from Turkey where I will be spending the winter season, we’ll try to organize some more master classes. It was just a joy to watch the passion the kids were showing while testing out their skills on sand. This was my first experience with children but surely it won’t be the last. Many schools have showed their interest in the project and I think we may turn these master classes into a sort of tradition; and if the kids can’t come to Brazilija, we’ll visit them” adds Plavins. “Maybe the next master class will be joined also by my partner for the coming season, Janis Peda”.
After a memorable 2012 season, Plavins and his partner Janis Smedins have indeed decided to go separate ways. Plavins will team up with Janis Peda who is currently playing in Italy’s second division while Smedins will join forces with Aleksandrs Samoilovs. Latvia’s third elite pair will be composed by Ruslans Sorokins and Toms Smedins.
