Snow Volley Christmas tournament attracts 64 teams in St. Petersburg
News from the National Federations
St. Petersburg, Russia, January 8, 2013. Yesterday – as Christmas was being celebrated in Russia and by all Eastern Orthodox Churches – the annual “Snow Volley Christmas Tournament” was held in Sestroretsk, some 40 km from Russia’s second largest city, Saint Petersburg. The event – organized by the St. Petersburg Sports Committee and by the Volleyball Association of Northwestern Russia – was joined by 64 teams with players aged from 11 to 65.
9 courts were set up as the organizers provided all participants with t-shirts, gifts, special souvenirs, while balls were donated by the Russian Volleyball Federation. Actually it was much more than just a Volleyball tournament, as the festival included some more contests, such as rope pulling, valenok throwing and dogsledding, all entertainments traditionally practiced by Russian people during the Christmas time. Hot tea and porridge with meat were prepared by a camp-kitchen at the expense of the organizers too.
