Tirana and Teuta top standings of Albanian league by end of the year
News from the National Federations
Tirana, Albania, December 30, 2012. With the end of the year quickly approaching, Albania’s Volleyball family was recently busy with some domestic competitions. After 14 rounds of play, Tirana still has an immaculate record in the women’s championship while Teuta is the provisional leader of the men’s division after 12 rounds were completed. The competition is set to resume this coming January 12 after the traditional Christmas break.
Tirana and UMB Volley seem to be the dominant forces in this year’s women’s national league and even though Tirana has edged UMB Volley twice (3:1 and 3:2), this rivalry shall continue and also contribute some close clashes up to the end of the season. As they are more experienced, the players of Tirana could have the upper hand but the season is still long and by this February the top four teams of the prelims will move on to play the so-called “Top Volley League”. Teuta and Skenderbeu are ranked third and fourth respectively with four rounds still to go for completion of the main phase. The teams ranked 5-8 will be moved to the “Volley League” that – as per the current standings – shall include the likes of Partizani, last year’s champions Minatori, Studenti and Vllaznia. This has been a disappointing season so far for Minatori as the club is confronted with severe financial constraints. Korabi and Dinamo round out the charts with every club having scored at least one win since the start of the main phase.
Teuta has showed good consistency so far to top the charts of the men’s league after 12 weeks. The club from Durres has suffered only one defeat to Tirana (2:3) thereby securing a good margin on the other teams. Vllaznia is the real sensation of the season being ranked second up to now, with Tirana and Studenti following in third and fourth. Last year’s champions Studenti have gone through ups and downs but this is still enough to claim a spot for the “Top Volley League” while – as per the current standings – Skenderbeu, Elbasani and Erzeni would move to the “Volley League” at the end of the main phase.
