Golden set brings Omichka into quarterfinals
2013 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Omsk, Russia, November 22, 2012. Omichka OMSK REGION of Russia edged Igtisadchi BAKU of Azerbaijan on Wednesday – via the golden set – to advance to the 1/4 finals of the 2013 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women and play there another side from that same country, Baki-Azeryol BAKU. These sides will play each other first in Omsk and then the return match will take place in Azerbaijan.
Igtisadchi – that had claimed the first round with the score of 3:1 – started out strong but OMSK could draw level at 7 in the opening set. Omichka gradually got to the front (11:9) and widened the gap already by the second technical time-out (16:9). Omichka players used their height to regularly stop the Thai players included in the roster of Igtisadchi and easily controlled the game up to the end of 25-16.
Even though Igtisadchi included Nadezhda Sak – who last year had played in Omsk – in the starting six for the second set, Omichka still set the pace of the game (8:6) and with the help of Olga Sazhina and Nelli Alisheva moved up 11:7. Igtisadchi took a time-out and could briefly fight back before Omichka accelerated once more the tempo to finish it off with the score of 25-18.
Igtisadchi was able to keep the score close in the early phases of the third set and claimed the lead after the second technical time-out (15:19), keeping it firmly up to the end (21-25).
Omichka OMSK REGION and Igtisadchi initially played point for point in the fourth set but the hosts could finally impose their rule and wrap it up at 25-13 to call for the golden set.
Omichka stretched that momentum there as well (6:2, 8:4) and never slowed down to eventually seal the game with the score of 15-8 to make it to the 1/4 finals of the CEV Cup.
“Today we played very bad, especially in reception. Our spikers did not do what they were supposed to do and the result is the obvious consequence” said Igtisadchi head coach Bulent Karslioglu.
“Congratulations to my players because this was a very difficult match against a strong opponent” said Omichka mentor Zoran Terzic. “I am very happy with the result and this win is extremely important before we play the semifinal stage of the national cup in Krasnoyarsk. In some phases of the match we did not show good quality in reception, so we have to work on this fundamental”.
Middle blocker Yuliya Podskalnaya adds: “I think this victory does not come as a surprise. We started out knowing we needed a victory to make it to the next round. We played very good for some sections of the match especially as we had analyzed our mistakes from the previous clash in Baku. I always believed in our chances because I feel like we are stronger than Igtisadchi”.
“Today we played as good as we can, fighting for every point” stresses Natalya Mammadova. “We were asked to reduce our errors to a minimum and we did so. I think we played as a team and we did it well. Our next opponent will be once again a team from Baku. I know their players very well as they have a mixture of members from the Azeri national team and foreigners. They will try it hard to win but I think we can make it to the Challenge Round”.
