Brink and Reckermann honored with Germany's most prestigious media award
News from the National Federations
Frankfurt, Germany, November 7, 2012. Germany’s Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann wrote history this past summer as they turned into the first European Beach Volleyball duo able to strike Olympic gold doing so in the iconic scenario of Horse Guards Parade in London. Since these glorious days Brink and Reckermann have been continuously under the spotlight of the media and recently added to their showcase another award, i.e. the 2012 “Bambi” in the sports category.
The “Bambi” is the most important distinction assigned by German media but definitely well-deserved for these guys whose actions in the final match against Alison/Emanuel of Brazil were followed on TV by more than nine millions of people. Brink and Reckermann were chosen among the 11 gold medals that Germany celebrated at London 2012 as their run was absolutely spectacular, ending with a breath-taking tie-break whereby they finally edged the reigning world champions. “Brink and Reckermann have been playing together since 2009” says the official statement, “claiming a series of medals and honors in domestic, European and world events and thereby turning into real role models especially for the team spirit they are known for. Beach Volleyball was first included in the Olympic program in 1996 and their performance will evidently have a good impact on the popularity of this discipline in Germany”.
After claiming European gold this past June in The Hague/Scheveningen and the memorable Olympic campaign at London 2012, Reckermann says about this additional award: “It is just crazy and I am really surprised. I never thought Beach Volleyball could be in contention for the most prestigious media award we have here in Germany. Of course we are extremely pleased with it as it helps draw additional attention from the media and popularize our sport”.
The official ceremony whereby the award will be presented is scheduled for November 22 in Düsseldorf and will be broadcast live by ARD. Brink and Reckermann join a very illustrious group including also Canadian singer Céline Dion (entertainment) and actor/singer Joachim Fuchsberger. As for the sports category, the Beach Volleyball duo becomes part of a very elitist family including former tennis stars Boris Becker and Steffi Graf plus Formula 1 multiple world champion Michael Schumacher.
