TRENTINO and BELCHATOW claim first wins at Club World Champs
News from the FIVB
Doha, Qatar, October 13, 2012. Europe’s standouts TRENTINO Diatec (ITA) and PGE Skra BELCHATOW (POL) successfully opened their campaign at the 2012 FIVB Club World Championships in Doha on Saturday as they edged their opponents from Qatar and Egypt respectively for the first day of preliminary action at Aspire Dome.
PGE Skra BELCHATOW defeated Zamalek of Egypt in straight sets (27-25, 25-19, and 28-26) in Pool B. Aleksandar Atanasijevic and Mariusz Wlazly were the best scorers of the winning side with 14 and 11 points respectively. Michal Winiarski added 9 and Daniel Plinski and Karol Klos each contributed 7 points. Zamalek’s Reda Haikal had a match-high 22 points followed by Mohamed Badawy with 11 tallies. The Polish club had an 8-4 advantage in blocking but Zamalek performed more solidly from the serving line with 7 aces vs. only 2 for the Poles.
Mariusz Wlazly, captain of PGE Skra, said: “We are happy with the victory, especially against a tough rival that we didn’t know and hence could not predict what to expect. It was a very tough match but we won it and this is the most important thing”.
Head coach Jacek Nawrocki added: “First of all we won a very difficult match. The opponent team was like a mystery for us. We knew some of the players but not how the team would play. So we concentrated in our style of Volleyball. It was a good game from the offensive point of view, one of those matches the fans enjoy a lot. I am happy that we won the key points in the first and third sets”.
In the other match of the day, actually scheduled for Pool A, the triple world champions of TRENTINO Diatec needed a real marathon to finally edge the home heroes of Al-Rayyan Sports Club after five sets (22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, and 15-9). TRENTINO had some ups and downs while the hosts were well paced by the duo composed by Mikko Oivanen and Valentin Bratoev who scored 20 points apiece. The final tally for TRENTINO was quite evenly distributed with three guys finishing in double digits in the end, namely Osmany Juantorena and Emanuele Birarelli with 15 and captain Matey Kaziyski with 14. TRENTINO performed very well in blocking, charting 16 vs. 11 for their Qatari opponents, with Birarelli registering 6 all alone, but suffered the pressure put by Al-Rayyan from the serving line that resulted in a total of 7 aces. On Sunday TRENTINO will have its next stop against Mexico’s Tigres UANL that today lost in straight sets to Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro.
Matey Kaziyski, captain of TRENTINO, said after the game: “It was a very difficult match. We started playing well and led for most of the first set and then we started to lose the focus. After being one set down, we started to play better and better. The most important thing is the victory. (Osmany) Juantorena left the game but came back and was the key to the win”.
Head coach Radostin Stoytchev: “I want to congratulate the Al-Rayyan club for the match today. The first one is always complicated. I didn’t know much about the team but it is an excellent one. I am very happy for the victory, mostly after coming back to win”.
