Portuguese Federation identifies goals for next Olympic cycle
News from the National Federations

Porto, Portugal, October 1, 2012. An official ceremony held at the premises of the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) in Porto opened the additional term of FPV President Vicente Araujo. The event was attended by many personalities and VIPs, such as Portugal’s Sports and Youth Secretary of State, Alexandre Mestre, the President of the National Olympic Committee, Vicente Moura, former Olympic gold medalist Rosa Mota, as well as by the President of the Angolan Volleyball Federation, the President of the Portuguese Canoeing Federation, representatives of the clubs and many other officials.
“Vicente Araújo has elevated the standards of Portuguese volleyball. For this final four-year-term mandate I wish him and the other governing bodies every success” said Rolando Sousa who chaired the FPV General Assembly.
Vicente Araújo, FPV President since 1996 and a member of the FIVB Board of Administration, has defined the priorities for his fifth consecutive mandate, with very ambitious goals.
“Aware of the difficult times we live in, but with no fear and with the conviction that we are capable of doing great things, we will work hard in the pursuit of excellence, even taking the risk of making mistakes, as it’s better that we act knowing that we can be sorry than being sorry for doing nothing”, stated Vicente Araújo, quoting Boccacio.
The main items listed in his program are:
-    Consolidate the development of Portuguese volleyball generating a new Olympic cycle that will culminate in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games;
-    Consolidate volleyball as an attractive product for media and economic agents;
-    Consolidate the development and expansion of the programs Gira-Volei and Gira +
-    Continue supporting the clubs activity and regional associations;
-    Work more closely with the national teams, with special attention to the women’s sector;
-    Reinforce institutional relations with other sports institutions.

“These are our purposes, our ambition and our determination. Continue to innovate and make things happen, with the objective of serving the interest of our sport” said the FPV President. “We need a policy committed to improve the value of sports to the country’s affirmation, which will inspire future generations" he added.
