Kiev, Ukraine, September 11, 2012. Ukraine’s Beach Volleyball champions were crowned this past weekend in Saki, a seaside resort in the Crimean peninsula after 19 and 22 duos had started their quest for glory in the women’s and men’s competition respectively already on Thursday.
The women’s tournament was highlighted by many surprises with two up-and-coming duos, Kovalenko/Lesunenko from Kiev and Karpik/Tanasienko from Mykolaiv, which qualified for the semis after edging much more experienced and decorated opponents. The two ladies from the capital city, Kovalenko and Lesunenko, eventually found their way to the final after besting their opponents in straight sets (21-10, 21-11). Baburina/Makhno won the second semifinal also in straight sets (21-15, 21-13) as they crossed their ways with another experienced pair, Basanova and Hrytsyuk from the city of Rivne. Basanova/Hrytsyuk eventually settled for bronze as they dominated the classification match with Karpik/Tanasienko (21-13, 21-7) before Baburina and Makhno claimed a very close final, with many spectators in attendance, by exploiting their long experience to best Kovalenko/Lesunenko 2:1 (21-16, 18-21, and 15-9).
In the men’s semifinals, the former youth world champions Popov/Samoday cruised to a 2:0 win (21-18, 21-11) over Yemelyanchik/Hudolyey while Babich/Ioisher, Ukraine’s most known pair in international competitions, got past Gordieiev/Reznik with a similar score (21-18, 21-18).
In what was a derby between teams from the city of Zaporizhzhya, Gordieiev/Reznik beat Yemelyanchik and Hudolyey in straight sets (21-10, 21-13); this game was followed by the “big final” where Popov/Samoday cruised to a speedy 21-13, 21-9 to beat Babich/Ioisher and take the Ukrainian title.
