The city of Assen will be playing host through this coming July 18-21 to the 2012 CEV U23 Beach Volleyball European Championship with the matches taking place in two different venues, i.e. the main square of Koopmansplein and Stadsbroek. The Netherlands will be represented by a total of four pairs, namely Riemke Braakman/Jolien Sinnema and Esther Hullegie/Lidia Bons in the women’s competition, while Jeroen Vismans/Mart Werkhoven and Jeffrey van Wijk/Steven van de Velde will participate in the men’s tournament.
The Dutch duos will play all of their matches in the center court located in Koopmansplein. The entrance is free and more details are available on the official website www.ekbeach23.nl
Riemke Braakman (pictured) stood on top of the podium last year in Porto together with regular partner Michelle Stiekema. Braakman/Stiekema recently participated in the final round of the FIVB Olympic Qualification in Moscow thereby helping their compatriots Sophie van Gestel and Madelein Meppelink qualify for the London Olympics. In Assen Riemke Braakman will team up with Jolien Sinnema, last year’s U20 national champion together with Esther Hullegie. Hullegie, on the other hand, will play together with Lidia Bons, who was the U16 Dutch national champion together with Sophie van Gestel in 2006 and winner of the U20 competition in 2010 while paired with Kirsten Sparnaay.
As for the local guys, Jeroen Vismans is a double national champion (U18 and U20) while the second Dutch team, van Wijk/van de Velde, were also U20 national champions in the past.
