Greek ‘Reds’ make history by progressing to Challenge Cup semis

Piraeus, Greece, March 9, 2017. On Wednesday night, the women’s team of Olympiacos PIRAEUS wrote a piece of history for one of Europe’s most decorated multi-sport clubs by securing their spot in the semi-finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women. Olympiacos achieved this feat by taking also the remake of their quarterfinal fixture with Belgium’s Asterix Avo BEVEREN 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21) much to the delight of almost 1,000 fans in attendance. Olympiacos have an impeccable record in the European Cups this season, having swept all of the six matches they have contested so far.
Saskia Hippe and Nadzeya Malasai top scored for Olympiacos PIRAEUS with 23 and 18 points, respectively. Out of her 23 points, Hippe scored three aces as Malasai chipped in with two blocks as well. In the next stage of the competition, Olympiacos will take on European Cups rookies Yenisei KRASNOYARSK of Russia – with the first match set to take place on March 29 at Melina Merkouri sports hall in Piraeus. Olympiacos started their journey in the Challenge Cup by eliminating titleholders C.S.M. BUCURESTI of Romania before rallying to two tiebreak wins over Turkey’s CANAKKALE Bldspor Kulübü.
