‘Orange-fuelled’ Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA prove too strong for Draisma Dynamo
2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Men
Apeldoorn, Netherlands, February 15, 2017. On Wednesday night, Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA took a big first step towards the semi-finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men. The Turkish team won their first quarterfinal match with Draisma Dynamo APELDOORN 3-1 (20-25, 25-11, 25-16, 25-20).
Draisma Dynamo and Ziraat Bankasi started playing their first quarterfinal match in a fully packed Omnisport hall in Apeldoorn. The two Dutch national team players from Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA, Jeroen Rauwerdink and Kay van Dijk, received a warm welcome from their fellow country people. Rauwerdink played for Dynamo between 2001 and 2008 and won the 2003 edition of the Top Teams Cup. This was the last time a Dutch team won a European Cup competition.
Helped by the home audience, Draisma Dynamo caught a promising start to the match against the favourite Turkish squad. The home side defended a small lead at both technical time-outs, and stayed cool in the final phase of the opening set. After good serving from Renzo Verschuren and Wessel Keemink, and a kill block from Rune Fasteland, Draisma Dynamo somewhat surprisingly won the first set 25-20.
After the first set, the course of the match changed completely. Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA, currently leading the highly competitive Turkish national league, showed their class in every aspect of the game – and especially in blocking the team of head coach Fernando Munoz Benitez was superior. The visitors took a 2-1 advantage after winning the second and third sets by 25-11 and 25-16, respectively.
Draisma Dynamo refused to give up and fought until the very end to even the score in the fourth set. After trailing by 16-10, the home side of head coach Bas Hellinga reduced the gap to three points: 21-18. After this last act of resistance, Draisma Dynamo finally surrendered and lost the match 3-1.
On March 1, Draisma Dynamo and Ziraat Bankasi will play the return match in the Turkish capital. Ziraat Bankasi ANKARA have to win two sets to advance to the semi-finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup.
