CHAUMONT VB 52 beat Spartak MYJAVA in straight sets
2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Men
Myjava, Slovakia, February 14, 2017. France’s CHAUMONT VB 52 and their Slovakian-born outside spiker Matej Patak rallied to a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) over Spartak MYJAVA in the first round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men quarterfinals.
CHAUMONT VB 52 pressured the home team with good service and strong defence to cruise to an early 6-2 lead and the current leaders of the French national league eventually sealed a speedy 25-16 set win. Spartak MYJAVA stepped up their efforts in the second set, and with the help of their many fans, the hosts rallied to a 21-16 lead. However, Spartak were not able to close the set and good serving from Javier Augusto Gonzalez Panton paved the way towards a 25-22 win for CHAUMONT VB 52. MYJAVA fought as much as they could in the third set too, leading 21-19 going into the final stages but the experienced players of CHAUMONT VB 52 made the difference again – and this time around their strong performance resulted in a 25-23 win. Vladimir Katona top scored for the home side with 18 points as Patak chipped in with 12 for the visitors.
Luboslav Salata, coach of Spartak MYJAVA: “We started really bad, as my young team was a little bit nervous at the beginning. The second set went a lot better from our side, as we served better, but it is a pity that we were not able to close it even when leading 21-16. We could clearly see our lack of experience at this level there. We had a chance also in the third set, but history repeated itself. This kind of matches are a great opportunity for my young players because they can learn a lot from such an experience.”
Silvano Prandi, coach of CHAUMONT VB 52: “We won in straight sets and this was our goal, but I am not completely satisfied with our performance. The problem is that we play with a different ball in our national league and my players had problems in reception with these Mikasa balls. Anyway, as I said, we won 3-0 and now we will focus on the next matches. Our goal is to win the Challenge Cup, but we know that there are very strong teams in this competition.”
