Record-breaking participation for qualifiers to inaugural U17 Men / U16 Women EuroVolley
2017 CEV U17 Men / U16 Women Volleyball European Championship
Luxembourg, January 23, 2017. After an impressive 22 U16 women’s and 23 U17 men’s teams participated in the zonally based 1st Round tournaments, the first ever 2017 CEV U16 Women and U17 Men Volleyball European Championships move on to the European organised 2nd Round. The two Final Rounds organisers have been confirmed as Konya (TUR) from July 3 to 11 for U17 Men and Sofia and Samokov (BUL) from July 21 to 29, 2017 for U16 Women.
Following the 1st Round tournaments held in 2016, already confirmed as joining the respective home teams in the Final Round are the winners of each 1st Round (zonal) tournament, namely:
U17 Men: GRE, RUS, CZE, FIN, ITA
U16 Women: TUR, RUS, CZE, FIN (pictured), ITA
All of the other teams that competed in the 1st Round have confirmed their wish to participate in the 2nd Round as well, providing them with a second chance to take one of the remaining six slots available to join the Finals. The pools were formed at the CEV office in Luxembourg and are confirmed as:
Pool A: EST, ISL, ROU, BUL (org.)
Pool B: CRO, SRB, MNE (org.)
Pool C: BEL (org.) POL, LAT
Pool D: DEN, NED, ESP (org.)
Pool E: HUN, BLR, UKR (org.)
Pool A: SRB (org.), HUN, BLR, MNE
Pool B: CRO, UKR, ROU, GRE (org.)
Pool C: DEN (org.), ISL, BEL, EST
Pool D: NED, POL (org.), ESP, LAT
The 2nd Round will take place between April 13-16, 2017, with each pool playing a single round robin tournament.
In the women’s U16 competition, the 1st placed team in each 2nd Round pool automatically qualifies to the Final Round (totalling four teams), along with the two best 2nd placed teams among the 2nd Round Pools (A-B-C-D).
In the men’s U17 competition, the 1st placed team in each 2nd Round pool automatically qualifies to the Final Round (totalling five teams), along with the best 2nd placed team among the 2nd Round Pools (A-B-C-D-E). With there being three pools with three teams, only the results against the 1st and 3rd placed teams will be used to ensure a fair and equal comparison across the pools.
