School project to spread Volleyball fever in Azerbaijan and Georgia
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women

Luxembourg, November 30, 2016. Azerbaijan and Georgia are set to experience a real Volleyball fever when these countries play host to the Final Round of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley in September next year. However, it is not only about elite sport. The CEV and the respective National Federations will be working closely in the lead up to the tournament to inspire the next generation of Azerbaijani and Georgian Volleyball players by involving schools, physical education teachers and young pupils – thus making them discover what Volleyball is all about.

The achievement of this ambitious goal will rely on the expertise and extensive knowledge of Athanasios Papageorgiou, a Greek-born coach and academic who has dedicated his entire life to Volleyball and chiefly contributed to the success of a similar project designed by the Turkish Volleyball Federation that reached out to tens of thousands of children.

The school project developed by the CEV in close cooperation with the Azerbaijan and Georgian Volleyball Federations is aimed at reaching the local youngsters, so that they take up a healthy lifestyle and learn the ABC of Volleyball, whilst developing sound social skills and making new friends.

The project is set to get underway in January with the first seminars taking place in the three cities that will be hosting matches of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley – Baku and Ganja - Göygöl in Azerbaijan, Tbilisi in Georgia. This action will help further promote the historic sporting event that these countries will be co-organising in the fall of 2017 and on top of it will lay the cornerstone for a lasting legacy resulting from the EuroVolley when it comes to the long-term development of Volleyball at the grassroots level.

Further information will follow in due course, but Azerbaijan and Georgia can get ready to experience a real Volleyball fever in the months preceding the competition that will eventually crown the new ‘Queens’ of European Volleyball!
