Sweden secure ticket to second qualifying round after drama with Switzerland
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Men

Tbilisi, Georgia, May 21, 2016. On Saturday Sweden secured their progression to the second qualifying stage of the 2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Men following their dramatic, hard-fought 3-2 victory (18-25, 25-12, 25-12, 23-25, 16-14) victory over Switzerland on the final day of competition at the New Volleyball Hall in Tbilisi.

Sweden and Switzerland opened the programme of the third and last competition day in Tbilisi fighting for first place in the group as they had previously claimed their respective matches with hosts Georgia and Azerbaijan. This ‘Clash of the Titans’ resulted in a five-set drama where Switzerland caught the better start before giving the second and third sets away by the same score (25-12). Switzerland stormed back in the fourth set and extended the match to a tie-break but luck was not on their side and Sweden eventually finished it all off at 16-14 to secure their ticket to the next stage.
The Swiss, on the other hand, will now have to wait for the results from the other pools being contested this weekend in Norway and Luxembourg to know whether they stay alive in the competition or not.

Hosts Georgia ended up losing their third match in a row before a partisan home crowd. This time around Azerbaijan’s powerful spikes and blocks were too much to stand for the home guys and Azerbaijan won the match in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-12) to settle for third place in the pool.
