Sweden and Switzerland to fight for top spot at EuroVolley qualifier in Tbilisi
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Men

Tbilisi, Georgia, May 20, 2016. The first-round qualifier – Pool 1 for the 2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Men continued on Friday in Tbilisi with another two matches and both Sweden and Switzerland celebrated their second straight win in the tournament to shape up a clash for the top position in the pool – and a spot in the second stage of the qualification process – that will follow on Saturday.

After their easy victory over Georgia on Thursday, Switzerland routed also Azerbaijan in three straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-21) to keep a perfect record in the competition. Sébastien Steigmeier paced the Swiss team with a personal tally of 20 points. The starting setter of Team Azerbaijan was replaced by Tural Hasanli in the second set and though the latter played with more confidence, this was not enough to prevent a 0-3 loss at the hands of the Swiss.

A lot of excitement was to be felt at Tbilisi’s New Volleyball Hall already during the warm-up of the match opposing Georgia to Sweden. The Scandinavian team celebrated their second victory in the competition and this time they did so in three sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-18). Though the Swedish guys have a lot more experience and are technically superior, the home side of Georgia fought with a lot of character up until the last ball touched the flooring. This was not enough to celebrate a first EuroVolley win for the Georgian team who were well steered by their captain and eventual top scorer – 14 points – Soso Lobzhanidze. Another player who contributed to the show was setter Lasha Chokheli who joined the actions towards the end of the second set. The Georgian crowd enjoyed the game and the atmosphere and can now look forward to the last match of their heroes who on Saturday will play their neighbours from Azerbaijan to complete their duties in the tournament.
