FYR of Macedonia and Sweden rout their opponents on day 1 in Strumica

Strumica, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, May 9, 2014. The hosts of the F.Y.R. of Macedonia and Sweden confirmed their status of pre-favorites in the first round qualifier for the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Men that got underway on Friday afternoon in the city of Strumica as they beat Azerbaijan (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) and Georgia (25-19, 25-9, 25-13) respectively. On Saturday the F.Y.R. of Macedonia will play Georgia while Sweden will take on Azerbaijan.
The home heroes of the F.Y.R. of Macedonia started off strong cruising to a speedy 3:0 victory in their opening match at Park sports hall where they routed Azerbaijan 25-15, 25-17, 25-15. The hosts had no problems at all in controlling the match thereby delighting 1,500 home fans as their supremacy was never in danger. Their head coach Zarko Ristoski (pictured) was a little afraid before the start of the match for it was the first time this season the team was at his disposal with the complete roster but his concerns vanished very quickly. Nikola Gjorgiev paced the winning side with 17 points well supported by Vlado Milev who recorded 9. Macedonia was the dominant force in this match and with this performance asserted their ambition to claim a ticket to the second stage of the qualification process.
In the other match of the day, Macedonia’s main contender in the Pool, Sweden, made it an easy task of their game with Georgia (25-19, 25-9, 25-13). Martin Larsson and Erik Sundberg top scored in the match with 10 and 9 points respectively while Sosho Lobzhanidze topped the charts for Georgia with 11. Sweden’s superstar Marcus Nilsson did not join the match at all.
