Defending champions MUSZYNA upset Azeryol after thrilling five-setter
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Muszyna, Poland, February 5, 2014. Polski Cukier Fakro MUSZYNA added something more to celebrate on Wednesday night for Poland’s Volleyball family after claiming a thrilling game with Azeryol BAKU in the Challenge Round of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women (3:2; 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 28-26, and 15-13). MUSZYNA – that in 2013 surprisingly beat Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL in the final – is now one step away from the semis but will first have to seize the night once more also next week in Azerbaijan to continue their campaign to retain the title they won last year.
Polski Cukier Fakro MIUSZYNA had already played another team from Azerbaijan also in the 1/4 finals, namely Lokomotiv BAKU, and was the underdog going into this game with Azeryol, a team that earlier this season had participated in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women. However, the hosts eventually had the upper hand thereby getting the right edge for the return game coming up in Baku next week.
“It is going to be a very difficult game for us” says MUSZYNA head coach Bogdan Serwinski. “We are playing an opponent which is definitely stronger than Lokomotiv. However, we will try to play our best as we did tonight. We believe in our chances to cause a surprise and win again. If this happens, that would be really great for us and our club!”
“It feels great to win this game” commented team captain Aleksandra Jagielo. “However, we hope that we can cause another sensation, actually the most important, also next week in Baku. We are very motivated for the return game in Azerbaijan.”
“It was a great match even though we finished very late” joked MUSZYNA team manager Artur Ziolko. “I want to congratulate our players; it looks like we have a good record with teams from Azerbaijan.”
“We should have won this match. We had a lot of chances and especially in the fourth set we could not capitalize on these opportunities” stresses Margareta Anna Kozuch, one of the star players of Azeryol. “Now we only have to focus on the return game in Baku. We took one point tonight and everything will now depend on us.”
