After straight defeat Khimik YUZHNY wins golden set to make Challenge Round
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women
Bielsko-Biala, Poland, January 22, 2014. Poland’s Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA delivered an excellent performance on Wednesday night to get back on track after last week’s defeat in the Ukraine but after edging Khimik YUZHNY in straight sets (26-24, 25-19, and 25-16) lost the golden set that followed (12-15) thereby missing out on a spot in the Challenge Round of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women. Khimik will be playing there DRESDNER SC of Germany.
Aluprof was confronted with a very difficult task after losing last week in straight sets to Khimik. The guests from the Ukraine were off to a very good start (1:5) but the hosts regrouped to draw level at 8. Khimik got to the front once again after the first technical time-out (11:14, 13:16) but Aluprof bounced back powered by their German-born spiker Heike Beier (21:19). Khimik nevertheless got a first set ball at 23:24 before the home team responded by scoring three straight points to pocket the final 26-24. The second set followed a very similar plot but halfway through Aluprof got the lead (14:10) and widened their margin at the second technical time-out (16:10) with Beier being again their most prolific player. In the end BIELSKO-BIALA cruised to the 25-19 that re-opened the fate of their 1/4 final fixture with Khimik. The Poles showed excellent quality also in the third set where they opened the gap shortly after the second technical time-out breaking away from 17:16 to 25-16 scoring eight consecutive points.
A golden set was then played to determine the side promoted to the Challenge Round and there things changed quite dramatically with Khimik leading the way 8:6 as teams changed sides of the court and then moving up 13:9. Aluprof responded by scoring three consecutive points but the following two were cashed by Khimik that this way could celebrate their qualification to the Challenge Round.
