Rote Raben score home victory bus miss out on spot for quarterfinals
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Vilsbiburg, Germany, December 12, 2013. On Wednesday Germany’s Rote Raben VILSBIBURG beat Finland’s LP SALO 3:2 (26-24, 13-25, 23-25, 25-12, and 15-7) but still could not make the 1/4 finals of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women as they had lost their away match with the score of 1:3. LP SALO – who last year had reached the semis of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup to claim Finland’s best result ever in the European Cups – will play Turkey’s standout Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL in the next round coming up in January after the Christmas break.
Rote Raben played without Tamari Miyashiro and Cristina Alves who are still recovering from injury but they could count on Cuban star Liana Mesa Luaces who joined the game right from the start thereby replacing Lena Stigrot that had starred in the last Bundesliga fixture with VC WIESBADEN. The first set was almost gone with LP SALO leading the way 17:23 but Rote Raben fought their way back to score seven points in a row and cash the final 26-24.
However, the Finns responded by dominating the scene in the second set cruising to a terrific 13-25 to re-assert their intention to make the next round. Though the third set was much closer, Finland’s multiple champions could have the upper hand in the end and with their 23-25 and 1:2 lead in sets they booked their spot in the 1/4 finals even before the match had come to a close. The players around head coach Kari Raatikainen had indeed claimed the first round at home with the score of 3:1 and could start their celebrations accordingly.
They evidently dropped their focus and concentration so that the hosts of Rote Raben found it easy to cash the fourth set (25-12). VILSBIBURG did not find any resistance also in the tie-break where they opened with an 8:0 run to cruise to the final 15-7 but still their home victory was somehow meaningless because their chances to make the next round were already gone after the third set.

“Though we could not make the 1/4 finals, this victory is very important for my team, especially from a psychological point of view” commented Rote Raben head coach Jorge Munari. “We have fought our way back after losing in straight sets to VC WIESBADEN in the Bundesliga” he added.
With their European campaign coming to an end, Rote Raben will now focus exclusively on the domestic competitions. On Saturday they are set to play CL competitor DRESDNER SC in the semi-finals of the national cup. The match is taking place at the Margon Arena there in Dresden and the players of Rote Raben will be supported by many fans who are set to travel by bus to the capital city of Saxony.
