Romania’s champions Tomis claim away victory to set their sight on CEV Cup semis
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Ankara, Turkey, February 5, 2014. Romania’s champions Tomis CONSTANTA claimed on Wednesday night their first game with Turkey’s Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA on schedule for the Challenge Round of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men. Tomis edged past their opponents in four sets (25-16, 18-25, 26-24, and 25-19) thereby getting the right edge for the return match coming up next week on the shores of the Black Sea.
The home side of Maliye Milli Piyango was sidelined by the injury suffered by their setter Dejan Vincic halfway through the opening set; that evidently affected the performance of the local heroes who lost that set with the score of 16-25. However, the hosts eventually found their way back into the game with their second setter Gökhan Catal well orchestrating his spikers, so that Maliye Milli Piyango could level the score (25-18).
World-class Volleyball was displayed in the third set where the score was very close all the way through before Tomis pocketed the final 24-26 after a mistake by the home guys. Things turned out to be much easier for Tomis in the fourth set where the Romanians exploited the many errors made by their opponents to cruise to the final 3:1 victory that sounds as a good omen before these teams cross their ways once more next week in Constanta.
