FRIEDRICHSHAFEN hopes for home win in CEV Cup Challenge Round with Skra
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men

Friedrichshafen, Germany, February 4, 2014. On Thursday VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN of Germany will be playing Poland’s multiple champions PGE Skra BELCHATOW for the Challenge Round of the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men. After missing out on a spot in the Playoffs 12 of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, VfB is among the eight teams who are still in contention for the trophy of the second most prestigious club competition in Europe.
“We do not want to hide our ambitions” says head coach Stelian Moculescu. “We do stand a chance to win this home game.”
The double-header with PGE Skra BELCHATOW is not a simple task. Skra is a seven-time national champion and in 2012 made it to the final match of the CEV Volleyball Champions League losing a very dramatic five-setter to Russia’s Zenit KAZAN. This season the team around former setter turned head coach Miguel Angel Falasca has performed really strong, especially in the national league.

“BELCHATOW is a very strong team” Moculescu says. “They would have performed well also in the CEV Volleyball Champions League if they only were given a chance to participate in that competition.” According to Moculescu, the key players pacing Skra are Stéphane Antiga and Samuele Tuia plus Argentine Facundo Conte. “On top of this, Mariusz Wlazly is one of the best opposite players in the world and this year we have seen that he has found back his passion for Volleyball” Moculescu adds. “I think Skra stand a good chance at winning the CEV Cup this year. They are playing at a very high level.”

However, VfB also has got much to offer. Even though they did not make the Playoffs 12 of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, the players captained by Max Günthör have improved and showed they are getting stronger and stronger lately. They have won nine straight matches and almost came back from 0:2 in sets in their match with BERLIN Recycling Volleys. “I am glad that we have such excellent second lines. This is a reason for being optimistic ahead of the match with PGE Skra BELCHATOW” Günthör adds.

VfB will be trying to use the advantage of playing at home to seize the night before the return game coming up next week – February 13 – in Poland.
