German rookie TV Ingersoll BÜHL close to upset CL silver medalists CUNEO
2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Bühl, Germany, December 9, 2013. Last week as they were playing the first round of the 1/8 finals in the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men, Germany’s TV Ingersoll BÜHL barely missed on a sensation as they lost only at the tie-break their home game with Italy’s Bre Banca Lannutti CUNEO (25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, and 5-15).
The home guys started very determined and fully focused imposing their pace right from the go in the first set. Head coach Ruben Wolochin opted for his best starting six with setter Axel Jacobsen, wing-spikers Björn Höhne and Joseph Sunder, middle blockers Andri Aganits and Nicholas Vogel, opposite Marvin Prolingheuer and libero David Molnar. Prolingheuer always found a way through the Italian block and even though CUNEO drew level at 23 all, TV Ingersoll finalized the next two counterattacks to seal the final 25-23.
The home guys trailed 7:11 in the early phases of the second set but they eventually fought their way back to cut their deficit to a minimum at the second technical time-out (15:16). The good serves by Valters Lagzdins pressured the guests from Italy but CUNEO was well marshaled by their setter Manuel Coscione on the way to the provisional 1:1 (20-25).
Wolochin decided to change two players for the start of the third set: Lucasz Szarek and Florian Ringseis performed well for the home side thereby paving the way for the final 25-19.
It looked like TV Ingersoll was going to cause a sensation by upsetting the silver medalists from last year’s CEV Volleyball Champions League as they played with great tempo also in the fourth set but as the score stood at 19 all CUNEO scored three in a row to pave the way for the final 22-25.
TV Ingersoll caught a disastrous start in the tie-break quickly trailing 0:6 and the Italians could comfortably cruise to the final 5-15 to celebrate a hard-fought away victory waiting for the return game coming up on Wednesday, December 11.
